Carpal Tunnel Syndrome This disorder is caused by compression as the median nerve passes under the flexor reticulum and results in pain, numbness and tingling in the area of the distribution of this nerve in the hand. It is estimated that more than two million people consults their GPs or specialists with regards to CTS. It is also estimated that many thousands of Carpal tunnel release operations were carried out each year, making it the most frequent surgery of the hand and wrist. It is met most often in middle-aged women, especially during pregnancy.

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is one of the most common disorders which are related to physical injuries. CTS are the pressing of the tightly spaced tunnel in the wrist by ligaments on the median nerve and the tendons connecting the fingers to the muscles of the forearm. So that why CTS is sometime called as median nerve entrapment. The signs and symptoms of CTS are with gradual onset of frequent burning, tingling or numbness sensation in the hand and the 3 mainly fingers (thumb, index and middle fingers). Usually these symptoms and signs become more noticeable at night but these are usually worsened during the day with severe pain, weakness, or numbness radiating up the arm from the hand and wrist. Losing the strength of gripping and the power in the hand may lead to great difficulties to grasp even small objects, or to do other manual tasks. Drug treatment is often disappointing in these cases. Surgical relief may have to be obtained by dividing the flexor retinaculum. Before deciding on such measure, however, acupuncture should be given a fair trial if there are no objective neurological signs, as it has often found to be effective Traditional Chinese and Western acupuncture is known to be the best alternative and effective treatment in CTS and eventually leading to avoid surgery or to use the anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen or corticosteroids. According to Traditional Chinese medicine, the disturbance of energy flow (Qi) and blood with addition to cold and dampness may result in developing CTS.

The acupuncture treatment courses, coupled with certain exercises, are alleviating swelling, inflammation, pain and stiffness in the wrist because it probably acts by reducing the soft tissue inflammation which causes the compression.
